Introduction
These next few pages explain some of the principles and practice with regard
to the conservation and repair of iron. The topic is divided into a number of
sections. The topic starts with a brief history of iron together with an
examination of its properties and production methods. This is followed by
sections on surveys, conservation ethics and repair techniques. A number
of video clips illustrate appropriate issues and techniques.
The photograph shows the repair of a wrought iron railway bridge (with cast
iron ribs).
